Since it's been a while since I spray-painted the boxes, I wanted to duplicate it before I posted any kind of tutorial. Just in case it was some happy accident. Well I did it again this week and it really does work so my friends...here is my little tutorial!
Enjoy!
Dip your brush into the glue and brush onto the metal. Make sure you cover it! Too little glue just means a little scraping at the end...not a big deal but not as fun either.
As soon as the glue is dry you can start spraying!
When the paint is almost dry (basically if it's just a tiny bit tacky) then you can start peeling. Yay!
99.9% came off super clean and pretty except for the small spots that maybe didn't have enough glue. I just used my exact-o knife to clean up any little specks that didn't come off when I was peeling.
Put the box back together and VOILA! You have a rockin' box in the color you wanted! Yay!
If you try it, let me know how it goes!

that is just totally cool. I kept looking at my kessets in white and thought how come these dont come in turquoise, in a true blue-red, in a blue violet, in a thalo green. The only thing that held me back was even thinking of masking out the metal parts with masking tape or frisket, how tedious that would be. But I can see that elmers and a flat bright brush would be much faster. Thank you! you are so cool! Please show us more of your projects.
ReplyDeleteeven though i cant spell... including kAssett, not kesset, I hope I can also ask you what brand of spray paint? For paper, or plastic, or wood or ?And also any sanding first? and how many coats of spray paint? Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI just used basic spray paint from Home Depot...I think it was Rustoleum brand each time too. No sanding and it took 2 coats.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Be sure to show me how yours comes out!
ok! thanks so much Laurie, I appreciate your answering my questions. That helps so much, You are the heart!!
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect! Our movers taped the Kassett boxes shut with moving tape and it peeled off the glossy covering, so I'm excited to see that spray painting worked for you. Can't wait to try it!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I loved it. I wanted to this with a similar box that I have in purple but I also wanted to paint the metal parts. Do you think the same spray painting is suitable for both paper and metal?
ReplyDeleteThank you.
